Two killed when small plane crashes into Central Florida yard

Two people were killed Thursday morning when a small plane crashed into the front yard of a Central Florida home, authorities said.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the fixed-wing, land-based aircraft nosedived into a yard near the Bartow Executive Airport around 11:30 a.m., The Lakeland Ledger reported.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was a Mooney M20J, WTSP reported.

An image provided by Polk County Fire Rescue officials showed the remnants of the four-seat, propeller-driven plane crumpled against a tree in the front yard of a one-story home.

The names of the two people aboard the aircraft have not been released; nobody on the ground was injured, according to Bay News 9.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are handling the investigation, the Ledger reported.
