Virginia driver escapes when car is trapped in Norfolk sinkhole

A driver in Virginia scrambled to safety Monday morning after a sinkhole opened up in a Norfolk neighborhood, trapping the car, authorities said.

Officials said the sinkhole in the Bayview area of the city opened when an underground pipe broke, WVEC tweeted. The pipe was installed in 1945, the television station reported.

The driver was able to escape from the car without suffering any injuries, WVEC reported.

City officials said they were unsure how long it would take to cap the main pipe that caused the flooding, the television station reported. Public utility officials and Norfolk police were at the scene, WVEC reported.
