Kidnap case hero gets burgers for life
The man who famously put down his Big Mac to help rescue three women held captive for a decade in a Cleveland house will never have to pay for another burger in his hometown.
Charles Ramsey has been promised free burgers for life at more than a dozen Cleveland-area restaurants.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports that the restaurant where Ramsey worked as a dishwasher initially created a special burger in his honor, but eateries in the city decided a larger tribute was due.
Ramsey was called a hero after helping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight break out of the west side house May 6. Arial Castro is now facing charges.
The newspaper said Ramsey was traveling and would get his “Chuck Card” when he returns.

Imprisoned Amish can skip classes
The Amish imprisoned in beard-cutting attacks on fellow Amish in Ohio will no longer be required to attend high-school equivalency classes behind bars.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons said Wednesday that Amish bishop Samuel Mullet and his followers are exempted from a policy requiring classes for inmates who lack high school diplomas.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports the decision came days after an attorney for Mullet complained that the policy of compulsory education violated his client’s First Amendment right to freedom of religion.
The 67-year-old Mullet is serving his 15-year term in a prison in Texarkana, Texas, and his co-defendants are held in prisons across the country. The other 15 received sentences ranging from one to seven years.
Federal prosecutors are OK with the decision.

Authorities haven’t disclosed a possible motive and didn’t specify how they broke the case.
TOLEDO
Police kill man holding shotgun
Toledo police say they have fatally shot a man who was holding a shotgun on a woman.
It happened at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday when officers patrolling the area came across the man holding the gun on the woman at a home.
WTOL-TV reports that the suspect refused to drop the weapon as ordered by officers, and then pointed it at them. That’s when they fired at him.
Four adults who were at the home were detained for questioning. The relationship between the man who was shot and the woman was not immediately clear.
Officers are still investigating.
