Ohio University Student Dies While On Spring Break

A former All-American soccer player at Tippecanoe High School fell off a balcony and died Wednesday.

Sarah Merritt, 20, a junior on Ohio University's women's soccer team, was on vacation with some friends in South Carolina when she fell five stories.

Police said she was apparently trying to climb from one balcony to another at a beach hotel.

Police said an autopsy will determine if any drugs or alcohol played a role in the fall, but they said they believe her death was an accident.

Officials said while at Tippecanoe High School in 2003, Merritt was the first girl to be named All-American in any sport.
