Hang on, should other songs be considered?

The Ohio House this week voted unanimously to make “Hang On Sloopy” the official rock song of Ohio. The bill now goes to the Ohio Senate.

The 1964 hit performed by Dayton rock band The Vibrations became the first rock-n-roll song performed by the Ohio State University Marching Band, which has played the song ever since.

Back in 1985, the Ohio General Assembly passed a joint resolution to make “Hang on Sloopy” Ohio’s official rock song. What’s different now is that the song will become part of the Ohio Revised Code if the Ohio Senate passes the new bill.

We posted the story on our Facebook page, and it’s generated some responses. Daniel Moss asks why doesn’t “O-H-I-O” by Dayton funk band Ohio Players get the designation. Chelsea Lynn writes: “Dislike. Believe it or not, there are other colleges in Ohio that have nothing to do with “Hang On Sloopy.” So tired of OSU. “What a waste of time!” was posted by Sanobia MzDiva Herd.
