Parents found neglectful

You may recall the parents from Silver Spring, Md., who let their 10- and 6-year-old children walk home from a park last December. A concerned citizen called the police, who picked up the kids halfway on their trek and drove them home.

This week Child Protective Services sent the Meitivs a letter informing them that they had been found responsible for “unsubstantiated” neglect.

The Meitivs have stated that they adhere to the philosophy of “free-range” parenting and have trained their children to walk alone by themselves, first around the block, then to nearby destinations before allowing them to walk a mile from a park back to their home.

In reaction to the CPS finding, the mother, Danielle Meitiv, wrote Slate writer Hanna Rosin, “teaching independence clearly IS a crime.”

The Meitivs now have a record of child neglect. Do you agree with the CPS’s ruling? Email connie.post@coxinc.com.
