Dayton police chased and used a taser against a suspect who dropped a stolen gun after a traffic stop Saturday afternoon, according to a police account of the incident.

According to a report, Herman Buchanan Jr., 19, was booked into Montgomery County jail for obstructing official business, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, underage possession of a firearm and improper handing of a firearm inside a motor vehicle.

On Saturday shortly before 4 p.m., police stopped a green Chrysler 300 in the left lane at West First Street and North Wilkinson Street after he spotted a turn signal violation and a violation of window tint standards.

“The front seat passenger quickly exited the vehicle and sprinted south bound on North Wilkinson Street,” the report read.

The officer said he observed a silver semi-automatic handgun drop from Buchanan to the ground.

Buchanan ignored officers’ commands to stop until he quickly turned and bent his knees, the police account said.

Police said Buchanan resisted efforts to apprehend him by “twisting and pulling his arms away.”

An officer delivered a fist strike to Buchanan’s torso, the other officer tased him on his back, then struck Buchanan’s right jaw while holding the taser in his right hand, police said.

Buchanan then complied and was handcuffed.

Police checked the handgun through records and found it reported stolen out of Kettering. Buchanan was taken to Grandview Hospital for his injuries, and he was released shortly thereafter and taken to jail.
