Money expert Clark Howard says used car prices are slowly beginning to drop, which is good news for your wallet.

A recent report from vehicle research website iSeeCars.com shows which cars were the most popular throughout the last year amid high prices and rising interest rates.

To come up with its data, iSeeCars analyzed 9.8 million used vehicles – from one to five years old – to see which models sold the most in 2022 compared to 2021.

What Is the Most Popular Vehicle in America?

The most popular vehicle in terms of sales last year was the Ford F-150, which was also the best-selling vehicle the year before.

Most people will pay between $33,000 to $41,800 for the latest Ford F-150 depending on the trim, features and upgrades, but prices can go much higher, according to Kelley Blue Book data.

Here are some key findings from the iSeeCars report:

  • Full-size trucks take the top three spots as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 pickups fall in line behind the top-ranked Ford F-150.
  • In a list dominated by big trucks and SUVs, the Honda Civic comes in at #5 as the highest-ranking sedan.
  • The Jeep Grand Cherokee makes its debut in the top 10 rankings, jumping two spots up from last year.

Here are the most popular vehicles in America.

Should I Buy a Used Car Right Now?

Clark's historical advice that you buy a one- or two-year-old used vehicle was turned on its head of late when used car prices started to cost more than new cars. But now that used car prices are starting to retreat, buying pre-owned vehicles will start to make financial sense again.

As the market continues to correct itself, Clark wants you — if you can — to hold off on buying a vehicle.

“This is the time to take your time and wait for the market to settle down,” says Clark. “If you don’t have to have a … used vehicle right now, don’t buy one.”
