Salvation Army collecting applications for Christmas food assistance

The Salvation Army of Dayton on Tuesday continued collecting applications for its annual Christmas food assistance program for needy Dayton area families.

The organization started collecting applications Monday, and will continue until Friday. The hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day at the Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, 1000 N. Keowee St. in Dayton.

Hundreds of people signed up Tuesday, and officials expected more during the signup period. More than 4,000 families received assistance last year, officials said Tuesday.

The amount of assistance each family receives depends on size and level of need. Applicants who are approved for assistance will be notified to pick up their food at a later date.

The assistance comes in the form of “either a gift card, a Kroger gift card, a turkey or depending on family size, it varies,” said LT. Bryan Bender of the Salvation Army.

Those applying for assistance must bring with them the following items:

  • Photo I.D. and social security card for each adult in your household
  • Social security card and birth certificate for each child
  • Proof of income
  • Proof of current address using a lease or land lord statement or current utility bill
