I-71 sign memorializes transgender teen Leelah Alcorn

A sign memorializing Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teenager who committed suicide in December 2014, has been erected along Interstate 71 in Warren County as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program.

Alcorn walked into traffic and was fatally struck along the same stretch of highway. The incident and the teen’s suicide note prompted a national conversation on transgender issues.

A community group, identified as Leelah Alcorn Memorial Highway on Facebook, adopted that part of the highway as part of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program.

According to ODOT, groups that join the Adopt-A-Highway program can erect memorial signs as an alternative to makeshift memorials that can be distracting and hazardous to drivers.
