Owners of the Springboro wine shop and bar — which traces its roots to 1998 — alerted customers late Monday afternoon on the wine bar’s Facebook page and posted the same notice on the front door of the business.
“We appreciate your patronage over the last seven years,” the notice says. “We have enjoyed being part of the community and will miss serving you.”
The wine bar opened Christmas week in 1998 under the name Mulligan’s Wine & Stuff, and later became Grapes of Ruth, and ultimately, Bella Vino. It has undergone several management and ownership changes in its 17 years.
The closing seemed to take patrons by surprise, according to the dozens of comments left on the wine bar’s Facebook page.
Small, independent wine bars and wine shops have faced increasing competition from grocery stores, including Kroger and Dorothy Lane Market. The Kroger store at Austin Landing in Miami Twp. recently expanded its wine-tasting program so that customers can sample wines every day between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The West Chester location — formerly Little Sonoma wine shop — opened in early 2013 at 6064 West Chester Road.
