SWAT Surrounds Huber Heights Apartment

Some residents in Huber Heights did not get much sleep overnight when SWAT members surrounded an apartment complex to deal with a man inside.

Officers spent more than three hours trying to convince a man to end the situation on Beaufort Drive peacefully. Three nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

Officers received a call about a man who was in need of help around 10:30 p.m. Monday. Because of that man several people were forced to evacuate their apartments as officers tried to end the standoff peacefully.

Chad Smith, 33, was eventually taken into custody. Officers said they plan to have him evaluated medically and possibly have a psychological evaluation too.

Smith’s arrested came after more than three hours of him holding police at bay.

Sgt. Chris Kash said, “Not sure who called us. Might be an anonymous source or it might have been a family member.”

Police said Smith shares the apartment with his grandmother. They said she was not home at the time when police said he became upset and threatened to hurt himself.

Kash said, “The threat was knife. Every threat he made to harm himself was with a knife. No other weapons were mentioned in this incident.”

Police said they called the SWAT team after Smith refused to respond to patrol officers at the door and refused to listen to their requests by phone.

Kash said, “This is the best possible scenario. No injury to people in the apartments, no injury to police and no injury to the suspect.”

According to police, they dealt with Smith before in another very similar situation a few years ago.
