TIPP CITY —Tipp City Mayor Joe Gibson said Monday he would support a downtown bar cited by state agents for staying open New Year’s past the COVID curfew and ranted about small business taking the brunt of the economic impact of the pandemic.

He also called on state and federal elected officials who he said have continued to get regular paychecks to take a pay cut — “to put a little skin in the game.”

The Ohio Investigative Unit said over the weekend Tony’s Bada Bing on Main Street downtown was cited for improper conduct after agents entered the establishment at 10:20 p.m. and observed around 20 patrons allegedly consuming alcohol and the business in full operation despite a 10 p.m. curfew order.

Gibson said during Tipp City Council’s meeting that he would stand up for Tony’s saying the business contributes a lot to the community.

“I am going to show my support for Tony’s as a small business in Tipp City. During this time of COVID, the effect has been on small businesses,” he said

“Tony’s didn’t violate a single solitary law. There was no law broken … it was a governor’s issued order from the department of health,” said Gibson, who is a lawyer.

Gibson criticized celebrities for their COVID-related lectures and also called for state and federal officials and employees he said haven’t missed a paycheck during COVID to take a pay cut.

He specifically called on those making $150,000 or more to take a cut to show “solidarity with the workers, the voters of this state.” The latter, Gibson said, “are making sacrifice after sacrifice.”

The mayor at one point apologized for what he called his “rant” about COVID.
