Crash at crossing gate stops oncoming train

Officers from the Carlisle Police Department were able to stop an oncoming train heading for a damaged railroad crossing on Central Ave. after a car stuck the crossing gate pole.

Preliminary information stated around 12:20 p.m., the driver of a car may have suffered a medical condition resulting in a crash into the crossing gate pole on the other side of the CSX railroad tracks knocking it down, back over the tracks with the rear end of the damaged car sitting partially on the tracks.

Medic crews on scene removed the driver and transported them to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police traveled down the tracks in both directions from the crash to stop potential train traffic from hitting the car and gate debris.

A crew from Norfolk-Southern arrived just before 1:00 p.m. to access damage.

Traffic is being rerouted to a side road while repairs are made.

The scene is under investigation.
