Dayton Amateur Golf Hall to add five members

The Dayton Amateur Golf Hall of Fame will be enhanced next month by the addition of five members.

Michael Castleforte, Emma Jandel, Greg Lawrence and Mike Suttman will be honored for the achievements on the golf course and Larry Hayes is in the group because of his dedication to scholarships for caddies.

The induction ceremony and a golf outing will be held at Kittyhawk Golf Center on Sept. 27.

Castleforte, a 33-year-old attorney who lives in Chicago, was a member of state champion golf teams at Alter High School in 1999 and 2000 and medalist of the 1999 tournament. He was captain of the golf team at Duke University. He has qualified for the U.S. Amateur three times and the U.S. Mid-Amateur four times.

Jandel, 27, earned four letters on the Oakwood High School boys golf team. In 2005 she was medalist in the Ohio High School girls championship and won the Western Women’s Junior Title. She was Women’s Ohio Amateur champion in 2006 and 2007. Since graduating from Ohio State in 2011, she has been playing professional golf.

Lawrence, 43, is a native of Vandalia who won the Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship in 1996 at the age of 24. He won the City Men’s Amateur Match Play Championship four years later and won the City Stroke Play crown by a record 17 strokes in 2004. Lawrence has not played much tournament golf in recent years, but a month ago he broke the course record at Miami Valley Golf Club by posting a 10-under-par 61.

Suttman, a 50-year-old insurance broker, is a graduate of Oakwood High School and Miami University. He won the City Men’s Amateur Match Play title in 1992 at the age of 27 and grabbed back-to-back Miami Valley Metro championships in 2000 and 2001. Only one other player (Pete Samborsky) has won Metros back-to-back.

Hayes, a financial adviser with UBS, is a member of Moraine Country Club. He has been passionate about Moraine’s caddie scholarship program and the club’s support of the Western Golf Association. The WGA provides Moraine caddies four-year Chick Evans scholarships to Miami and Ohio State universities. Currently there are 12 Moraine caddies in college with Evans scholarships and 25 who receive $3,000 Moraine scholarships annually.

Chip shots

• Neither Michael Bernard of Huber Heights nor Cameron Willis of Eaton made it to the round of 64 last week in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club. Both shot 149.

After opening with a disappointing 79, Bernard bounced back with a 70 in the second round. Willis posted a 73 in the first round but slipped to 76 the next day.

Will Grimmer and Daniel Wetterich of Cincinnati qualified for match play. Grimmer shot 71-70 for 141 and Wetterich had 73-69 for 142.

• Thanks to the tireless efforts of member Willie Gayle, Miami Valley Golf Club has been designated as a National Historic Place by the Department of the Interior.

According to an article in the August issue of Golf Digest magazine, the famed Baltusrol Golf Club of Springfield, N.J., was only the fifth club on the National Historic list when it was added last fall.

• Walnut Grove Country Club will host the Miami Valley Golf Association’s Metropolitan Senior and Mid-Amateur Championships on Sept. 3-4. The entry deadline for both competitions is Tuesday.

• The team of Lindsey Murray of Tipp City and Abigail Wellens of Loveland qualified Wednesday for the 2016 U.S. Amateur Four Ball Championship May 19-25 at Streamside Resort in Bowling Green, Fla.

The 18-hole qualifier was held at Brown’s Run Country Club. Murray and Wellens had a team score of 73 to tie for second place. Only three teams advanced.

• The nearest qualifier for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship will be held Sept. 3 at The Heritage Club in Mason. The U.S. Mid-Am will be played Oct. 3-8 at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla.
