Vandalia's highest-paid employees: I-Team Payroll Project

The city of Vandalia paid 15 employees more than $100,000 last year, according to the I-Team Payroll Project searchable database of public employees.

The highest-paid workers were city administrators. Six of the six-figure earners worked in the police department, including Sgt. Gary Jackson who retired in May.

An I-Team investigation this year found the ability to cash out unused sick and vacation leave is a rare perk in the private sector, though local governments are on the hook for tens of millions of dollars worth of these payments.

The five highest paid Vandalia employees last year were:

1. Jon Crusey, city manager: $135,973

2. Steven Clark, parks and recreation director: $119,399

3. Douglas Knight, police chief: $116,584

4. Gary Jackson, police sergeant: $115,557

5. Thomas Vallery, police sergeant: $114,529
