Warren County family furniture store closing after 43 years

24-hour business could be developed at corner

Coomer Furniture is closing after more than 43 years in Warren County.

The family store and 10 acres of property at Ohio 122 and Drake Road, are going up for sale, according to Sally Coomer Jackson.

Jackson said she was the last of five family members who had operated the store for more than four decades.

“It’s bittersweet. I’ve got a lot of memories of Mom and Dad (Charles and Devonia Coomer) in here,” she said. “I’m just getting worked to death.”

All inventory is up for sale. The store will close by the end of the month, Jackson said.

The corner is just north of Lebanon High School and east of the Warren County Career Center.

In 2010, Clearcreek Twp. trustees rezoned 6.2 acres from residential to commercial use in keeping with long-range plans for the intersection.

The rezoning allows for businesses, including a restaurant or gas station, open 24 hours.

“If they allow something in there that’s allowed to stay open 24 hours, that will change the dynamic of the neighborhood,” neighbor Mike Miller said in 2010.

Today, the surrounding properties are a mix of homes and businesses.

“This is a wonderful corner. This is a growing part of our town,” Jackson said Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Miller, who lived across Ohio 122 from the store, said he was moving away from the area.

“What I thought was a relatively tranquil country setting is being developed,” said Miller, adding he was in the process of moving Wednesday.

Jackson said she was unsure about the future of the property, but certain the store would close in November.

“I’ve been here since I was 16. I’m 60. It’s time for me to retire,” she said.
