The first day of the new year will stay wet tonight as a line of showers and isolated thunderstorms move through the area.

The rain will bring brief downpours, gusty winds and even small hail will be possible, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. The threat for severe weather is low.

Evening temperatures will be in the mid-40s with overnight lows dipping to the upper 30s.

Starting around dawn on Saturday, there will be a slight chance of showers and continuing gusty winds as high as 23 mph, the NWS said. Otherwise it will be cloudy with a high of around 44 degrees.

Once night falls chances of rain will quickly rise, making showers likely a few hours after sunset. Rain chances will fall again before dawn on Sunday, with a chance slowly dwindling throughout the day on Sunday.

At night on Saturday temperatures will fall to around 37 degrees.

Aside from rain chances, Sunday will be cloudy with a high around 42 degrees. Once night falls, the NWS predicts rain chances will disappear entirely, and clouds will gradually decrease as temperatures fall to around 30 degrees.
