The Workforce Recruitment Program is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private-sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities.

“We take pride in striving to be a model employer for individuals with disabilities and are committed to maximizing opportunities to strengthen work experience while supporting the mission,” said Kevin Simmons, Affirmative Employment Program manager. “Students with disabilities are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through temporary summer or permanent jobs.”

The recruitment program is co-sponsored by the Department of Defense and the Department of Labor and internships are funded by the Department of Defense. Trained Workforce Recruitment Program recruiters from federal agencies conduct interviews with interested candidates from accredited colleges and universities across the country. Candidates represent all majors, and range from college freshmen to graduate students and law students.

Information from interviewed candidates is compiled in a searchable database that is available year-round to any hiring officials or Human Resource specialists in federal agencies.

“This program provides a great way to get top talent and fresh ideas to help your organization at no cost to the unit,” said Simmons.

Though there is no commitment to convert the internships onto permanent positions. If the intern proves to perform successfully and there is an authorization available, the conversion can be made with no announcement or competition through Schedule A Hiring Authority.

“If the organization needs additional time to assess the performance of an individual, a two-year term appointment can be made in lieu of a permanent conversion,” said Simmons.

Internships can begin as soon as possible. Employers can register at www.wrp.gov to review qualified candidates and rank top selections. Once selected, contact Simmons by March 8 at 88FSS.FSCA.AEPSEPDI@us.af.mil or 937-904-3308 to secure interns and initiate the pre-employment process.
