The shooting suspect is described as a clean-shaven man in his early 20s with short spiked blond hair, according to police. As of Saturday, no arrests had been made.
The girl, who was not identified, was listed in serious condition at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She was shot in the left jaw with a small-caliber handgun, said Huber Heights police Sgt. Chris Johnson.
“Most of the family members were there and they weren’t aware that an intruder was in there until the shot went off,” Johnson said. “It appears he went right in and knew exactly what to do and where the victim was at.”
There was no evidence of a break-in, he said.
A second child was unhurt who was sleeping on the floor in the same bedroom during the shooting, Johnson said.
Neighbors were visibly shaken by news of the incident.
“I can’t imagine really what they’re feeling right now,” said neighbor Michelle Moe, of the girl’s family.
“It is kind of scary,” Moe said as she fought back tears. “I want to protect my kids, I want to stay home and not let them out of the house and stay in a bubble.”
Detectives, who secured the area with crime scene tape for several hours, recovered a gun holster but no weapon down the street. Police did not confirm Saturday whether the holster was connected to the shooting.
