4 delicious, must-try Dayton sugar cookies

Tuesday was National Cookie Day! That sounds like a good excuse to celebrate all week long with some of Dayton’s finest sugar cookies that offer something just a little extra special.

1. Dorothy Lane Market

Laura’s cookies from DLM are not your average sugar cookies, but they are oh so delicious.  The secret is that Laura’s cookie dough is sour-cream based; this makes the cookie light and airy on the inside, but substantial enough that it won’t fall apart on you.  A layer of almond-flavored frosting covers the cookie for a truly unique and unbeatable flavor combination.  Laura’s cookies are available in both large ($2.99) and small sizes ($2.15).  There are usually many different shapes and seasonal decorations to choose from.

Locations: Oakwood: 2710 Far Hills Ave., Oakwood; Washington Square: 6177 Far Hills Ave., Centerville;  Springboro: 740 N. Main St., Springboro

Hours: Springboro and Centerville locations are open from 6 a.m. - 11 p.m., and the Oakwood location is open 24 hours

2. Elé Cake Co.

Elé Cake Co. is another great option for sugar cookies, and so much more!  The plain sugar cookies are a great deal at 65 cents apiece. They are crispy, and a little jazzed up with a colored crust of granulated sugar on top. The decorated cookies are really where it’s at, though. They are everything you want from a sugar cookie and then some. The decadent icing is what really sends this cookie over the top; it’s like biting into a buttercream pillow – YUM!

Locations: 810 E. Dixie Drive, West Carrollton; 1279 North Fairfield Road, Beavercreek

Hours: Varies by location, click here for a complete listing.

3. Cheryl’s

If you’re looking for variety, then Cheryl’s is definitely the place to go.  This plain sugar cookie is soft, buttery and crumbly; plus there's a little hint of lemon that really adds dimension to the flavor.  Cheryl's also offers a wide variety of flavored sugar cookies with buttercream icing, including strawberry, orange, key lime and lemon burst. The icing on these cookies is hardened, so if you’re a big fan of the buttercream I would splurge for a premium cookie with more icing.  Almost all of their cookies are $1.69, with the exception of the premium cookie which costs $1.99.

Locations: Town & Country, 338 E. Stroop Road, Kettering; The Greene, 83 Plum St., Beavercreek

Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sunday 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.

4. La Puf Sweets

More than just a bakery, this is the ultimate sweet shop destination in Dayton. But that doesn’t mean their sugar cookies should be overlooked! Iced or plain, they’re as delicious as they are beautiful.

Location: 1003 Shroyer Road, Dayton

Hours: Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sunday
