Make no mistake, ele Cake Bistro & Wine Bar at Austin Landing has far more than just cakes… not that there would be anything wrong if it were.

The shrimp and grits with fried green tomatoes AND bacon are the only proof you need of that, but I will get to that dish in just a few moments.

As its Dayton Restaurant Week menu demonstrates, ele cake Bistro & Wine Bar is all about flavor.

Like the roughly 50 other restaurants participating in Restaurant Week, ele's special menu will be available through Sunday, July 31.

WHAT YOU'LL GET
The relatively new eatery at 3680 Rigby Road in Miamisburg offers its bright bibb lettuce and pear salad, a choice of two appetizers and a choice of three entrees for $25.16 each.

Most of the items are available on the restaurant's regular menu, so Restaurant Week presents a good opportunity to sample what the bistro typically offers each evening at a reduced price.

The pear salad with its bleu cheese, sliced pear, avocado, walnuts and dried cranberries was like summer on a plate.

PRO TIPS
We took advantage of the restaurant's weekly "Wine Down Wednesday" special and a ordered a bottle of Paco & Lola "Lolo" Albarino ($11) with our meal on the restaurant's patio. Happy hour is from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday with specials on appetizers, beer, spirits and wine flights.

BACK TO THOSE EPIC SHRIMP AND GRITS
I am going to get to the highlight of the meal right now.

The breaded shrimp and creamy grits on a bed of fried green tomatoes topped with hollandaise sauce and red pepper puree are as decadent as the description implies. The dish has a slight kick thanks to the spicy shrimp and puree, and that's a very delicious dish. It is savory without being too heavy on a warm night. It is on the restaurant's dinner menu for $11.

My dinner companion and I also tried fried risotto -- cheesy fritters served with a tomato coulis as sauce and parmesan cheese. The cheesy center was a bonus for this dish, which is on ele's dinner menu for $9.

THE MAIN EVENT

For our entrees, we went with the Moroccan Lamb Meatballs ($17 on the regular dinner menu) and the Fish of the Day, a roasted salmon served with grilled asparagus, potatoes and a cucumber relish with a prosecco vinaigrette. The daily price of the fish of the day meal varies.

The restaurant's other entree option is chicken and gnocchi.

The meatballs were tangy and moist, but the potato pancakes and ratatouille -- squash, eggplant and yellow bell pepper -- were the real stars of the hearty plate in my book. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and nice and creamy inside.

The fish was moist and the cucumber relish and vinaigrette played well together.

We finished our wine on ele's patio and watched the show the sky put on as the sun went down.
