Dayton Daily News reporter Barrie Barber, NewsCenter 7 anchor Cheryl McHenry and NewsCenter 7 videographer Bob Garlock went on a 12,000-mile journey with a crew from the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base from Dec. 31-Jan. 4.
The journey took them from Dayton, to Maryland, Germany and Afghanistan. On the way back to the U.S., they traveled with injured American troops coming home for treatment.

AT A GLANCE: C-17 GLOBEMASTER III
The four-engine jet has flown Air Force missions around the world transporting troops, wounded warriors and cargo since the mid 1990s. The Air Force Reserve 445th Airlift Wing, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, has nine of the planes which replaced the aging C-5 Galaxy beginning in 2011.
On a mission to Afghanistan last week, the airmen flew an "extended range" version of the C-17 with extra fuel for the more than 12,000-mile round trip journey from Ohio.
