After 110 years, Dayton Motorcycle Club rolls on

Members still riding high, maintaining bonds

DAYTON — The Vann family has been riding motorcycles almost as long as the Dayton Motorcycle Club has existed.

Both the family and club continue to ride strong today — 110 years after motorcycles made their Dayton racing debut at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

“Just the fellowship,” third-generation rider Doug Vann said when asked why he joined the DMC, which formed in 1908 and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1910.

“Everyone here is here for a reason. It’s a family-oriented sport.”

The club roster lists 74 names — Dave Newman ranks No. 1 in longevity after joining in 1957 and Bob Moore is No. 2, joining three years later — but attracting members isn’t as easy as it once was for the club on Stony Hollow Road.

“Most people don’t have the time anymore, they have so much to do,” DMC president Kevin Looney said.

“It’s hard to find people that want to work and help promote the sport and make it grow.”
