Three area athletes win titles at state indoor track & field championships

Three local athletes won Division 2/3 championships at the state indoor track & field championships Friday at SPIRE Institute in Geneva Ohio.

Dunbar High School junior Dai’Vontay Young finished first in the boys 60-meter hurdles in 8.06 seconds, a top-50 performance in the nation this season, according to the Milesplit track website. Young also took third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds, and placed fifth in the 200-meter dash, in 22.17 seconds.

Young’s performances earned Dunbar 20 points and a seventh-place finish in the boys team standings at state, the best ranking by any local team. Cleveland Glenville dominated the meet with 68 points, and Marlington High School was second with 25.

Marion Local senior Nate Buschur won the boys pole vault state title by more than a foot, leaping 15 feet, 8 inches. That was also a top-50 performance in the nation this season, according to Milesplit.

In the girls state meet, Maddy Merritt, a senior at Legacy Christian in Xenia, won the Division 2/3 400-meter championship in a time of 57.50 seconds. Merritt also finished third in the 200 meters, clocking 25.68 seconds. Merritt scored 16 points for Legacy Christian, putting the Knights in a tie for ninth in the team standings.

Waynesville also tied for ninth with 16 points, led by Samantha Erbach, who finished third in the 1600 meters (5:08.5) and fifth in the 800 (2:18.55).

The Division I indoor state track championships are Saturday at SPIRE.
