Baker Mayfield on Giants drafting Daniel Jones: ‘Blows my mind’

Browns quarterback not shy with opinions in GQ Magazine feature

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield earned headlines this week for his comments in a GQ Magazine feature.

In an article focused on the NFL’s “scariest young quarterback” playing for the “league’s most talked-about team,” the lines standing out for NFL fans concern Baker’s opinion of rookie New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

“I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones,” Mayfield said in the article. “Blows my mind.”

The Giants were criticized for taking the Duke quarterback Jones with the sixth overall pick. Jones was a three-year starter, and the Blue Devils were 19-19 in those three years.

“Some people overthink it,” Mayfield said. “That's where people go wrong. They forget you've gotta win.”

The Browns finished 7-8-1 last season, Mayfield’s first. It was their 11th straight losing season but a huge improvement after an 0-16 finish in 2017.

The Browns are a popular pick to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 in a large part because of Mayfield.

“I'm not going to act like I have it all figured out,” Mayfield said. “I believe in myself. Some people think that's cocky, but if you don't believe you're any good, then I don't think you're gonna have any success. If you go out there thinking you're gonna fail, you're gonna fail. Which is just the truth.”
