Reds release minor leaguer Donald Lutz

The Cincinnati Reds released minor league outfielder Donald Lutz on Wednesday.

Lutz underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on his elbow in April. He was hitting .190 in 13 games for Triple-A Louisville when he suffered the injury.

Lutz hit .301 in 123 games with the Dayton Dragons in 2011.

Lutz made his big league debut with the Reds in 2013 and hit .241 in 34 games. He appeared in 28 games for the Reds in 2014.

Lutz, a German and United States citizen, was the first player raised in Germany to play in the big leagues.

The Reds placed left fielder Marlon Byrd on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left wrist and called up Triple-A infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr.
