The Bengals are playing in the franchise’s third conference championship and seeking a third Super Bowl appearance, first since 1988. The Chiefs have made the AFC Championship four straight seasons and seeking a third straight trip to the Super Bowl.
Tupou, who was limited all week by a knee injury, is among the seven Bengals players who are inactive Sunday, joined by wide receiver Trenton Irwin and Stanley Morgan, cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, running back Trayveon Williams, offensive tackle Fred Johnson and defensive end Cam Sample. Morgan was limited in practices this week because of a hamstring injury, and Sample was out with a groin injury.
Square joined the team on Tuesday after spending time with the Raiders this season. He was on the Raiders’ practice squad when they elevated him for the Jan. 15 wild card game against the Bengals and played 21 defensive snaps in the loss.
Assuming he plays Sunday, Square will become the first player to appear in a playoff game against one team and then play for that team in the same postseason, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He played for the Bears in a Week 1 game against the Raiders and then played eight games for the Raiders this season.
Last week, the Bengals added defensive tackle Zach Kerr to the 53-man roster, and he played 12 defensive snaps against the Titans. Kerr also spent time with Arizona and San Francisco this season.
