The Cincinnati Reds ended August with another performance that does not bode well for their chances in the final month of the season.

One day after a 10-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs, the Reds were routed by another National League Central Division rival, falling 7-5 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds (15-20) are 1-4 against the second-place Cardinals this season and trail them by 2½ games in the division. The top two teams make the playoffs.

The Cardinals improved to 22-16 against the Reds at Great American Ball Park in the last five seasons. That’s the best record among NL Central teams.

Anthony DeSclafani delivered his third subpar performance in a row, allowing seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He left the game after giving up a grand slam to Paul DeJong in the fourth.

DeSclafani has allowed 18 earned runs in 10 innings in his last three starts. His ERA has climbed to 7.71.

Michael Lorenzen followed DeSclafani and pitched four scoreless innings, lowering his ERA from 6.75 to 5.19.

The Reds trailed 7-2 until the ninth when Eugenio Suarez hit a three-run home run.
