While drivers in the Miami Valley wait for the weather to cooperate before they turn some laps, others from the area have been a little more fortunate.
Count Centerville native Bryan Sellers among the latter. The American Le Mans Series driver is eighth in points in the GT class after two events.
Sellers and driving teammate Wolf Henzler — driving a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR for Team Falken Tire — finished 10th at the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series event at Long Beach on April 20. With Sellers behind the wheel Team Falken Tire led 26 minutes of the two-hour race. They were leading with 57 minutes to go when Henzler took over. Pit stops shuffled them back but they were just outside the top three when Henzler made contact with another car and had to serve a 60-second penalty stop.
“It was a great feeling to be back in the lead of an ALMS race” Sellers said, “but Wolf and myself had both hoped the laps we would be leading would come at the end of the race. We felt we had a very strong opportunity and unfortunately things just didn’t go our way.”
Next up for Sellers is the ALMS Monterey at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., on May 11. He returns to his home state with an ALMS race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington on June 15.
Westfall leads at Lawrenceburg: Ludlow Falls' Matt Westfall has established himself as the driver to beat in the modified division at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana. Westfall, who has led laps in all three modified races, holds a 120-point lead. He just missed his second straight win last weekend when teammate Jeff Babcock passed him on the last lap. Westfall has one win and two second-place finishes so far.
Smith leads Division 3: Middletown's Terry Smith looks to add to his division points lead when Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis hosts the Spring Spectacle of Speed today through Sunday. The event is the first of six on the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule for the North Central Division (Division 3). Smith traveled to Cecil, Ga., to compete in a Division 2 event on March 10. His run of 7.432 seconds at 165.46 mph beat the effort of Florida's Glen Treadwell (8.033 at 148.61 mph) in the Comp Eliminator final.
Charity event at WRP: Former Eldora Speedway queen Brittany Holland will host a Racers for Kids charity event at Waynesfield Raceway Park on May 25. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drivers willing to participate are asked to leave a message on WRP's Facebook page.
