Zack McKibben returned a punt 72 yards with eight seconds remaining to set up Brady Klingshirn’s game-winning 26-yard field goal as time expired as Coldwater defeated New Middletown Springfield 38-35 in the Division VI football state championship on Sunday night at Massillon’s Tiger Stadium.

The Cavaliers (12-0) trailed 35-28 but tied the game with 1:36 to play on Myles Blasingame’s 37-yard TD pass to Tyler Schwieterman.

Coldwater’s defense forced a punt and McKibben’s return put the Cavaliers on the Springfield 11. After a 2-yard run by Blasingame and a timeout, Klingshirn booted the game-winner.

Blasingame finished with three touchdown passes, two to McKibben, and two TD runs. Blasingame finished 11-of-20 for 185 yards passing and had 17 carries for 99 yards on the ground.

McKibben rushed for 82 yards and caught four passes for 76 yards. Schwieterman had four receptions for 68 yards.

Quarterback Beau Brungard broke a 28-all deadlock with a 47-yard TD run for New Middletown Springfield (11-1) with 2:44 to play. Brungard finished with 261 yards rushing and four TDs and also passed for a TD.

The teams combined for 878 yards of offense in a back-and-forth affair. Neither team led by more than seven points.

It marked the seventh state championship for Coldwater and the 37th for the Midwest Athletic Conference.
