Knucklehead of the Week
Connor Bird, son of basketball legend Larry Bird, was arrested last week after getting into an argument with his ex-girlfriend. The young Bird, 21, got into a fight with the woman at his apartment near Indiana University and, according to police, threw a cell phone at her. Later, after a debate on the issues of the day went sideways, Bird allegedly tried to hit the woman with his car. Police threw in a marijuana possession charge.
I was watching CNN when that huge asteroid was speeding toward Earth. They had a “countdown clock” on the screen, which was amusing. Thankfully, the event proved to be as anticlimactic as a New Year’s Eve countdown, although a small space boulder hitting an empty arena in Houston might’ve spared us the pain of watching tonight’s NBA All-Star Game.
Indiana is No. 1 in the real college basketball poll, the one compiled by the Associated Press, which polls media types who actually watch games. Meanwhile, the coaches poll has Duke in the top spot. Obviously, not many coaches watched basketball one week ago, when the Hoosiers spanked Ohio State in Columbus and the Dukies turned back that Boston College juggernaut by a single point.
The Big Ten has promised to stop scheduling football games against Division I-AA opponents. About time. I also like the idea of playing nine or 10 conference games, although the trade-off will be fewer home games. Which means less revenue. Which means athletic directors whining like a kid without a smartphone.
The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue has never been about sports. Luckily, when I was a kid my mom never figured that out. Now it's not even about swimming. Kate Upton graces this year's cover in a parka, and not much else. She posed in Antarctica, which, of course, is known for its many picturesque beaches.
I've attended a couple UD women's basketball games recently. These Flyers are fun to watch and they will be going to Brooklyn to play in the Atlantic 10 tournament. During a timeout, at both games, they played "Call Me Maybe" and on the video boards showed fans dancing. The star of the video board? UD men's starter Devin Oliver.
Three Alabama football players were busted last week for beating up and robbing fellow students. Nick Saban suspended the idiots and the school eventually got around to kicking them off campus. And in a true testament to the power of SEC football, one of the kids who was rolled by the Tide vowed to keep cheering for his team.
I took my son to the Wright State-Valparaiso basketball game Tuesday night and forgot all about the State of the Union festivities. Sounds like I missed some reality TV excitement when a politician took a drink of water … on television! Seriously, what's all the fuss about? Was it really vodka?
Michael Jordan turns 50 today, and every time I turn on the radio it's the same question: MJ or LeBron? I'll take Mary Ann. I mean, Michael. … It's been a week since the Notre Dame-Louisville thriller, which went five overtimes. I stayed up past midnight to watch it all. What a game. … Nice job by the Tribe luring Michael Bourn to the shores of Lake Erie. His signing shoves Drew Stubbs to right field.
