College football: Dayton caps season with record-setting day

It was a record setting day at Welcome Stadium on Saturday, as the Dayton Flyers (8-3, 6-2 Pioneer Football League) finished off their season with a 51-38 win over Butler (3-9, 2-6).

Records are often about scoring and that’s been the theme for the Flyers all season.

The Dayton offense came into the game 49 points shy of the single-season scoring record. That mark fell early in the fourth quarter when Sam Webster booted a 30-yard field goal for the Flyers’ final points of the game.

Ryan Skibinski tied a UD record with three touchdown receptions in the first half. It started with a 12-yard strike in the first quarter for Dayton’s first points of the game. Skibinski added two more touchdown catches in the second quarter. The senior finished the game with 144 yards on eight catches.

Adam Trautman has already re-written the career receptions record this season, and he established a new single-season total in the finale.

Trautman caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter, his 14th of the season. The senior tight end set a new record with his 70th catch of the season to set up another score in the second quarter.

Trautman ends his career with 178 receptions and 31 TD catches, numbers that continue to drive up his stock for next April’s NFL Draft.

Lost in the record-setting numbers was another day-at-the-office for Jack Cook.

The Flyers quarterback was 19-of-28 passing for 278 yards and four touchdown passes. He also ran for another score. The redshirt sophomore has accounted for 35 touchdowns this season.

Dayton also had two 100-yard rushing efforts on the day. Jake Chisholm led the way 166 yards on 21 carries. Senior Sean Prophit had 133 yards on only six carries, including a touchdown run.

Dayton rolled up 608 yards of offense against Butler. The Flyers never punted and they scored on nine straight possessions.

Senior receiver Kyle Butts was honored at halftime as this year’s winner of the Lt. Andy Zulli Award. That honor goes to the player who best displays qualities of sportsmanship, scholarship, and leadership.

The Cincinnati native is the Flyers special teams captain, ranks third on the team in receptions, and is a three-time member of the PFL academic honor roll.
