Mitchell, who scored 30 points against Rhode Island two games earlier, scored 26 points on 11-of-22 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in 32 minutes. Toppin scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes.
The two players dueled for most of the game, and Toppin sat out a six-minute stretch in the second half after picking up his third foul while guarding Mitchell.
“He’s a really good player,” Toppin said. “They give him the ball every single possession. Some are going to go in, and some won’t. We’re going to play our regular defense. If his shot is falling, it’s just falling. We’re just going to have to do a better job the next time.”
