EXCLUSIVE: 7 things you didn't know about Bengals draft history

The Cincinnati Bengals participated in their first NFL Draft in 1968, when they made 41 picks.

In the years since, the Bengals have drafted a total of 612 players from 193 different colleges, schools ranging from Tuskegee to James Madison to BYU to Ohio State.

With the 2016 NFL Draft coming on April 28, we pulled data about the Bengals' draft history from Pro Football Reference to see what we would find.

Here are seven things you might not have know about the Bengals' history in the draft.

The first pick ever: Bob Johnson of Tennessee

The Bengals took Tennessee center Bob Johnson with the second overall pick in the 1968 draft, making him the franchise's first ever selection.

Johnson would go on to make 10 Pro Bowls playing all 12 of his professional seasons in Cincinnati. In all, the Bengals picked 14 players in that first draft who would go on to make Pro Bowls, including Utah tight end Bob Trumpy (12th round, 301st pick, 10 Pro Bowls), Saginaw Valley State linebacker Al Beauchamp (5th round, 138pick pick, 8 Pro Bowls) and Texas guard Howard Fest (6th round, 139th pick, 8 Pro Bowls).

Of 59 first-round picks in their history, the Bengals have selected a linebacker 10 times, making it the most frequest first-round position.

The most productive of that group was Takeo Spikes,the Auburn product who was the 13th overall pick in 1998. He went on to start for 14 seasons and play in 219 total games.

The most recent first-round linebacker was USC's Keith Rivers in 2008, when he was the ninth overall selection.

Favorite position overall? Defensive Back

Out of 612 total picks from 1968-2015, the Bengals have taken a player listed as a defensive back 111 times (18 percent of the total picks).

That group includes Lincoln University's Lemar Parrish, who was the 163rd overall pick in 1970 (seventh round) and went on to make eight Pro Bowls and play in 166 NFL games. Washington State has been the most popular source for those defensive back choices, with four total, including Bernard Jackson, a fourth-round pick in 1972 who made five Pro Bowls.

Of the 193 colleges from which the Bengals have taken players, Ohio State has produced the most, with 17.

Dunbar High School product Dan Willinson was the first overall pick to the Bengals in 1994, and Archie Griffin was the other Buckeye drafted in the first round by Cincinnati, with the 24th pick in 1976.

Alabama has been the source for the most first-round choices, with four: DE John Copeland (5th overall in 1993), T Andre Smith (6th overall in 2009), DB Dre Kirkpatrick (17th overall in 2012) and LB Emanuel King (25th overall in 1985).

The Bengals have made the first overall pick three times: Ohio State DT Dan Wilkinson (1994), Penn State RB Ki-Jana Carter (1995) and USC QB Carson Palmer (2003).

They have picked in the top five 15 times, and to date the best of those has been USC tackle Anthony Munoz, who made 11 Pro Bowls and is a member of the Hall of Fame.

Blair Bush is the longest-lasting Bengals draft pick

In 1978, the Bengals took Washington center Blair Bush with the 16th overall pick. To date, he has played in the most NFL games of the any Cincinnati selection, with 246 from 1978-94. The first five of those seasons came in Cincinnati.

In all, eight players chosen by the Bengals have appeared in at least 200 NFL games, but half of that group never made a Pro Bowl.

The Bengals picked UCLA guard Max Montoya with the 168th pick (in the seventh round) in 1979. He went on to start for 14 seasons, play in 223 NFL games and make the Pro Bowl four times.

The Bengals have found their share of later-round gems. In 1970, they drafted Lincoln University defensive back Lemar Parrish in the seventh round, and he went on to eight Pro Bowls. A total of 14 players picked by Cincinnati in the fourth round or after have made the Pro Bowl.
