SPORTS DAILY: Recalling the Browns’ last playoff win

Say what you will about the Browns, but they have won a playoff game more recently than the Bengals. And they did it with Vinny Testaverde at quarterback.

Bill Belichick coached the Browns to a 20-13 wild-card win over the New England Patriots on Jan. 1, 1995. Testaverde completed 20 of 30 for 268 yards and a touchdown, Matt Stover kicked two field goals, Leroy Hoard had a 10-yard touchdown run and current ESPN analyst Louis Riddick intercepted a pass.

Pittsburgh ousted the Browns the following week, and later that year owner Art Modell was on a Baltimore tarmac announcing the team’s relocation, preening with the man Cleveland columnist Bill Livingston famously dubbed Governor Hee Haw.

In what way is this relevant? In no way whatsoever except as a means of demonstrating exactly how long the Bengals have gone without winning in the postseason. All the regular-season success they’ve had lately tends to obscure just how truly awful they were during the 1990s.

Bengals beat writer Jay Morrison, who will cover tonight's wild-card game against Pittsburgh at Paul Brown Stadium for Cox Media Group, informs us it's been 9,133 days since the Bengals' last playoff win back in January 1991, the longest active dry spell in the NFL.

As most fans know, the Bengals have made the playoffs five years in a row but keep losing in the first round. Coach Marvin Lewis is 0-6 in the postseason.

The Steelers have a little drought of their own working. They have lost three playoff games in a row, their last success coming 1,812 days ago.

Kickoff is 8:15 on CBS.

Wrestler vows to help rescue Manziel from demons

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel needs help. Most people have known this for some time, and if they didn’t know it before he ran off to Las Vegas, donned a disguise and called himself “Billy,” they probably do now.

Not unaware of the situation is former professional wrestling legend Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who once, by his own admission, took any drug and consumed any drink put in front of him.

And now Jake “The Snake” is reaching out to Johnny Football.

The WWE Hall of Famer and idol of many told Rolling Stone magazine he would like to take Manziel under his wing if someone could hook them up.

“I’ll take care of him,” Roberts told the magazine. “I’ll save his life or drive him crazy, one of the two.”

The Browns, who are rumored to have had enough of Manziel’s antics and might part ways soon, had no immediate comment.

Braxton Miller truly seems to appreciate OSU fans

Thanks to New York Yankees great Derek Jeter, athletes in all sports have the ability to write stories in their own words — OK, I’m sure they have help — and have them posted on a website called “The Players Tribune.”

In a piece called "Dear Buckeye Nation," former Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller took advantage of this opportunity and touched on a variety of subjects Friday, including how much he appreciated all the fan support he received after shoulder surgery.

The Wayne High School graduate also wrote about how bad he felt not being able to participate in last year’s playoffs. In all seriousness, ardent Buckeye fans actually might need a tissue because whoever actually wrote it did a great job.

Miller also made it clear he never seriously considered transferring when it became obvious he would not play quarterback for the Buckeyes this past season.
