Herrera to make first career start for Reds as Gennett continues to rest his shoulder

“There will be a strong temptation to hold him out with the off day Thursday,” interim manager Jim Riggleman said. “I would think that would be the likelihood. If he somehow came in and said, ‘I feel great. Let me get in there,’ that would be different, but I don’t think he feels that way.”

Alex Blandino started for Gennett on Monday in a 6-5 loss to the Brewers, and Rosell Herrera took Gennett’s place Tuesday. It will be the first career start for Herrera, who debuted Thursday, the same day he was promoted from Triple-A Louisville.

“Blandino’s doing a great job,” Riggleman said. “Rosell’s been here for a number of days. I’ve got to get him a game here. Obviously, the objective is to win the ballgame. He was playing very well in Triple-A. He moves well. We expect him to go out there and give us a good ballgame. I hate to have a guy on the bench sit for 10 straight days. With Scooter down, it gives us an opportunity to get him in there and get Blandino back in there (Wednesday) if Scooter doesn’t play.”
