The NCAA has lifted a recruiting dead period that lasted more than a year after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many area players are taking advantage.

That means players like Joseph Jean-Louis of Centerville get to travel the state, region and beyond to compare their talents to their peers and get to know more about colleges that could be their future homes.

“It’s a great feeling being able to compete again,” Jean-Louis said. “The feeling when you’re able to touch cleats and turf is a feeling I’m ready to revive and a feeling I’ve missed.”

Here is a look at some of the players from the area who are hitting the recruiting trail this month (Class of 2022 unless noted):

Antwan Blackshear, defensive tackle, Trotwood-Madison

Rams standout visited Ball State this week and is planning to hit several more campuses this month — starting with Toledo on Friday then Liberty this weekend.

“The Ball State camp went well,” he said. “I performed great in drills and competition and I think I caught the eye of the defensive line coach.”

Delian Bradley, defensive back, Springfield

The safety prospect went to Ohio State on Tuesday, the first day players were allowed back in campus.

He told BuckeyeScoop.com he is planning to see Pitt, Penn and Penn State this week as he continues to entertain a large list of offers that includes Michigan State, West Virginia, Harvard and Arizona State.

Anthony Brown, receiver (2023), Springfield

A fast-rising junior-to-be, Brown turned heads at Ohio State’s first one-day camp of the year on Wednesday.

He said he hit Columbus first both because it was convenient (because of location) and to make sure he made a strong first impression.

Brown is headed to Penn State on Sunday and Michigan on the 13th with a trip to Purdue also in the works.

Jokell Brown, defensive lineman, Springfield

The 6-foot, 283-ponder had five sacks in six games last season and has qualified for the state track meet in the shot put.

He is planning to visit Wisconsin on Monday with trips to Cincinnati, Toledo, Kentucky, Tennessee State, Akron and Ohio on tap according to his father.

He will also attend a camp in Indianapolis.

Kamaury Cleveland, quarterback, Trotwood-Madison

The No. 2 passer in the Miami Valley League last season at West Carrollton has transferred to Trotwood-Madison. He shared a busy schedule on Twitter this week with plans to visit Ball State, Liberty, Florida State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Duke, North Carolina, Cincinnati and Ohio State along with attending a camp in Indianapolis on the 12th.

Cleveland threw for 1,331 yards and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions in eight games last season for the Pirates. He also ran for 308 yards and three more touchdowns.

Corey Flanders, linebacker, Alter

The 6-1, 225-pounder had 37 tackles last season and camped at Mercer this week. He tweeted he will visit Akron next week.

C.J. Hicks, linebacker, Alter

The Ohio State commit made the first of what figure to be many visits to Columbus this week as he continues to act as one of the lead recruiters in the Buckeye class.

Corwyn Hurt, defensive back, Miamisburg

The 5-11, 177-pounder who had four interceptions for the Vikings last season has already visited Cincinnati and Ohio State.

He is planning to see Purdue and Youngstown State this weekend.

Tywan January, defensive lineman, Springfield

The 5-foot-11, 280-pounder, who has an offer from Akron, is starting his June on a southern swing.

After hitting Mercer on Tuesday, he went to Clemson on Wednesday and South Carolina on Thursday. He was set to finish that trip with a stop at N.C. State on Friday then be at Bowling Green on Sunday.

“It has been a wonderful trip so far,” he said Thursday, crediting Tramain Hall of Enhance U training facility for helping him set it up. “I have been getting a lot of interest, especially from the Mercer camp.”

His stop at Clemson included a chat with coach Dabo Swinney.

“Clemson was a great camp,” January said. “Coach Swinney and he told me to keep working hard.”

Joseph Jean-Louis, linebacker (2023), Centerville

The 6-2, 200-pounder had 26 tackles and a sack last season and is planning to see Toledo this weekend.

He plans to see Notre Dame and Kentucky next week with a visit to Ohio State on June 22.

Kaleb Johnson, running back, Hamilton

The 6-1, 200-pounder who ran for 786 yards and eight touchdowns last season visited Michigan this week.

He told Rivals he has scheduled official visits for Iowa, Iowa State, Pitt and California — all schools that have offered him scholarships.

Brady Ouhl, quarterback (2023), Piqua

After throwing for 1,077 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games last season as a sophomore, Ouhl is planning to go to Ashland next week and Youngstown State on June 14. He will also camp at Toledo later this month.

“I couldn’t be more happy to get out and throw to people,” he said. “I feel like my arm strength isn’t shown enough in my film, so it’ll be good to get out and show people what I have.”

Te’Sean Smoot, quarterback, Springfield

The 6-1, 180-pounder led the GWOC in passing last season with 2,269 yards and 24 touchdowns while running for another 603 yards and nine scores en route to the state semifinals.

He said he is planning to visit UAB, Austin Peay and Western Kentucky this weekend after competing at the state track meet (long jump) Friday.

Next week, he will go to Ohio State then camp at Michigan on the 13th.

In the third week of June, he plans to visit Duke and N.C. State on the 18th and 19th, respectively.

Aamil Wagner, offensive lineman, Wayne

Vasean Washington, offensive lineman, Springfield

The 6-5, 280-pounder with an offer from Dartmouth camped at Ball State this week.

He said he plans to visit Ohio State on the 16th and Miami (Ohio) on the 26th with others likely as well.
