Bellbrook takes 2nd in SWBL swim meets

The Bellbrook boys and girls both came in second in the Southwestern Buckeye League swimming championships held Monday, Feb. 8, at the Beavercreek YMCA.

Oakwood swept the team titles. Its boys team had 208 points to 111 for Bellbrook. The girls had 234 to 100 for Bellbrook.

The 1-meter diving event was where Bellbrook got big points. The boys took the first three places with junior Andrew Oswalt getting first, junior Andrew Montgomery second and senior Parker Smith third. Oswalt scored 203.75 points to 162.50 for Montgomery.

For the girls, freshman Maison Gallimore was second while Amanda Stewart was fourth and Sarah Van Oss was fifth. Both are sophomores. Gallimore had 158.45 points to 159.10 for first-place winner Katie Rupp of Oakwood, who also is a freshman.

In the swimming events, all three Bellbrook girls relay teams captured second place. The 200-yard freestyle relay included Shea Sampson, Lauren Thompson, Anna Drake and Alyssa Morrison. The 400 freestyle team was Kathleen Magill, Erin Homan, Lauren Delong and Katie Robertson. The 200 medley team was  Thompson, Delong, Drake and Morrison.

Individually, the top finishers were: Morrison, third in 50 freestyle; Thompson, fifth in 100 backstroke; Delong, third in 100 breaststroke; Sampson, fourth in 100 butterfly; and Drake, second in the 200 individual medley.

The boys grabbed a pair of second places in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. The freestyle relay team consisted of Robert McComb, Charlie Black, Josh Dregalla and Dylan Cicicco. The medley team was McComb, Jason Luthan, Dicicco and Lance Crockett.

Individually, Dicicco was third in the 50 and 100 free; Dregalla fifth in the 200 and 500 free; McComb third in 500 free and sixth in the 100 backstroke;  Luthman second in the 100 butterfly and third in 100 breaststroke; and Black was fourth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Bellbrook grads get hoops playing time

Lynzee Johnson, now a senior on the Marist College women’s basketball team, is averaging 5.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in 21 minutes per game. The Poughkeepsie, N.Y., school leads the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and is looking for a fifth straight trip to the women’s NCAA Division I tournament. Johnson is majoring in biomedical science with plans to go to medical school.

Hilary Spears, a 6-foot sophomore, is part of the eight-player rotation at Ohio Valley College, an NCAA Division II school in Vienna, W.Va. She plays about 25 minutes per game, averaging 6.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. She is second on the team in rebounding and third in assists. Kendra Benedict, a Troy Christian grad, leads the team in scoring (19.9 points) and rebounds (7.7).

Ohio Valley is 4-15, last in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
