Miami Valley wrestler Kolodzik following brother’s lead

Miami Valley freshman has familiar look, pins event’s top seed at 106.

FAIRBORN — The singlet and warm-up have a familiar look.

It is one part homage and one part joke for Miami Valley High School freshman 106-pounder Matthew Kolodzik about wearing the same ones his brother — Daniel — wore while dominating local wrestling just a few years ago.

“I kind of want to follow in the footsteps of my brother,” Kolodzik said after pinning top-seeded Kyle Keller of Delta in 3:31 in the second round of the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Holiday Tournament at the Nutter Center Thursday.

“Part of it is meant as a joke, but part of it is serious. I am proud of where I go to school and the opportunity to wrestle.”

Kolodzik will be joined in the quarterfinals by Troy Christian’s Jarrod Ganger and Eaton’s Michael May. Ganger pinned second-seeded Caleb Ervin of Glen Este and May bounced fifth-seed Mason Gallagher of Greeneview before surprising fellow freshman Cameron Kelly of Bellbrook.

“You can’t pay attention to the seeds or who is where,” May said after reversing Kelly to a cradle to secure the fall. “I wasn’t supposed to win that match, but I did.”

Déjà vu all over again: As Waynesville returning state runner-up Cody Steiner ran past Wayne’s Marcus Windsor, the two exchanged the same greeting, “See you (today).”

Windsor, the third seed, and second-seeded Steiner could meet in the semifinals.

“It’s funny,” Windsor said. “After 10 years all the people who are really good, you’ve known since when you were little.”

Down to the wire: Centerville coach Alan Bair has seen something new, a tight team race.

“With Graham here, it had been a race for second,” Bair said. “But, there has been some good matches, seeded kids have lost, the superstar freshmen are doing things. It’s been fun to watch.”

Stebbins led early, but after two rounds Pickerington Central and Washington Court House shared the lead with 63 points each. Wayne (56.5) was the top area team.

“You are going to have to have four or five placers and everyone else win a match or two to win it,” Bair said.

Don’t drink the water: The start was delayed two-and-a-half hours after a water main break on the Wright State campus.

Once the main was fixed, pipe pressure had to rebuild for rest rooms to be operable. Drinking fountains were still off limits due to a boil advisory.
