Jones surpasses 1,000 career points for Ponitz

Mercedes Jones of Ponitz Tech High School recently surpassed 1,000 career points. According to Ponitz athletic director Jamesetta Taylor, Jones is the believed to be the first City League girls basketball player to hit four digits in career scoring since Dunbar’s Kim Belton in the 1980s.

A 6-foot-1 center/post for coach Corey Steinke, Jones is averaging 24 points and 9.0 rebounds for the Golden Panthers.

Jones is a four-year starter at Ponitz. She owns a 3.5 GPA and also is a City League MVP in volleyball. Hiram College is among the schools recruiting her.

“She’s an exceptional student and athlete,” Taylor said.

Ponitz played at Thurgood Marshall on Monday.

  • Thurgood Marshall will play Ponitz Tech in a boys basketball rescheduled freshman, JV and varsity tripleheader on Monday. The games were moved from Feb. 11.

City League boys hoop will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at UD Arena on Feb. 16. Stivers will play Meadowdale at 7 p.m. following by Thurgood vs. Dunbar at 8:30 p.m.

Dunbar (16-3) is No. 3 in this week’s Division II state poll. Thurgood (12-4) is No. 7. Dunbar beat Thurgood 65-55 on Jan. 3.

  • Fenwick has promoted Richard Harknett to its girls varsity soccer coach. He was a Falcons assistant in 2012-13. Tom McEwan and Kate Gallo were listed as Fenwick co-head coaches last season. Fenwick won the Division III state championship in 2012.

Harknett has 32 years of combined coaching and playing experience. He coached club soccer for 15 seasons.

  • The streak goes on for the Miamisburg girls basketball team.

Miamisburg recently beat rival West Carrollton 45-28. That pushed the Vikings’ win streak over the Pirates to 25 straight games, dating to the end of the 1994-95 season. The teams were scheduled to play again on Monday night.

  • Three-time defending state champion Marion Local was recently presented the Army National Guard national ranking trophy. That was part of the ninth annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions.

The Flyers were ranked No. 114 in the final national rankings and were among 50 schools to be honored on the tour.

  • Former Middletown and Fenwick head baseball coach Fred Nori has landed an assistant coaching position at Indiana University.
