Ponitz’s Pit: ‘In 2nd seat, I was always right’

Think you want to be a head coach? Think again.

That's essentially what first-year Ponitz High School boys varsity basketball coach Steve Pittman admitted following last week's 63-45 defeat of visiting Oakwood.

A former University of Dayton Flyer (1985-89) by way of Beavercreek High School, “Pit” was the longtime top assistant to Darnell Hoskins, also a former Flyer (1996-97) by way of Chaminade Julienne. They first teamed at Springfield High School, then had a highly successful run at Thurgood Marshall in the City League.

Hoskins couldn't talk Pittman into joining him at Middletown this season. Soon after, Pittman succeeded Dwayne Hansbro as the head coach at Ponitz.

“The difference is, when I was in the second seat with Darnell, I was always right,” Pittman admitted. “Now, being in the first seat, it is a difficult transition. The kids are doing their best to learn a new system. All the wording, the different verbiage. I thought it would be a little bit easier, but actually, it isn’t.”

Pittman’s son, Wayne grad Malcolm Pittman, is a top senior sub at Wilmington after transferring from Mount Vernon Nazarene. Malcolm often watches Ponitz games. Don’t be surprised if his first coaching position is as an assistant to his father.

“I’m blessed,” Steve said. “The administration here and my players have been wonderful. We have a group of parents who come to every game and they mimic every call. It’s been really fun.”

Ponitz (5-3) will host Belmont at 8 p.m. on Friday and is at Graham at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
