Kyrie Irving reportedly requested a trade from Cleveland so he can be the star of his own team. Interestingly, his top preference may be Kawhi Leonard’s team.

The Spurs are the point guard's first choice, according to Adam Zagoria of ZAGSBLOG.

“One league source told ZAGSBLOG that the Knicks were not Irving’s preferred destination, and that San Antonio was atop his list. ESPN reported the same information.”

Irving’s four-team list includes the Spurs, Knicks, Timberwolves and Heat. Minnesota already cashed in its more appealing assets to acquire Jimmy Butler, while Miami and Cleveland have some recent animosity for one another after LeBron James’ infamous move to South Beach.

That leaves the Spurs and Knicks. Irving played high school ball in New Jersey, and with Carmelo Anthony on the trade block, New York may need a go-to scorer.

In San Antonio, Irving would be option 1b behind Leonard. Irving is notorious for his poor defense, while Leonard is a true two-way player. The combination, however, could be lethal as the Spurs search for ways to halt the powerhouse Warriors. That said, if Irving’s goal is to be the undisputed cornerstone, that won’t happen in San Antonio.

Irving doesn’t have a no-trade clause, and with two years left on his deal, doesn’t have the leverage Paul George had when he asked Indiana to trade him earlier this summer. George’s upper-hand mitigated Indiana’s return from Oklahoma City, though Irving’s heavily leaked trade demand won’t help the Cavs much either.

As the Cavaliers scan the market for the best return, the Spurs will have to determine how much is too much for Irving, and if his addition would ensure they won’t just be playing for second place in a crowded Western Conference.
