Springfield (17-2) makes D-I state poll breakthrough

The state's most under-the-radar boys high school basketball program just made a breakthrough. Springfield has cracked the top 10 in the Associated Press Division I state poll.

The weekly ratings were released Monday afternoon and Springfield (17-2) was ranked No. 10. Previously, the Wildcats were stuck in the “others” category, earning points but not enough to position themselves among the top 10.

Southeastern (19-1) had one first-place vote and maintained its No. 4 position in D-IV.

It's been a banner regular season for Springfield. The Wildcats won their first title in 12 years by beating Waynefor the second time last Friday, 56-54. That secured the Greater Western Ohio Conference National East championship for Springfield, which is 9-1 with one conference game remaining.

Springfield South last won a share of a title in 2005. Wildcats coach Isaiah Carson played on three South teams that swept outright GWOC Eastern titles from 2002-04. Springfield was chosen the No. 1 seed in the upcoming D-I sectional and takes a five-game win streak to Kettering Fairmont on Tuesday.

Springfield hosts Trotwood-Madison (18-2) on Friday in a matchup of the area's best boys teams. The Rams are second in the D-II state poll this week and also are a top seed.

Springfield closes the regular season by hosting Miamisburg on Saturday. Springfield plays Tecumseh at Trotwood in its D-I sectional opener on Feb. 24.

Southeastern won the Ohio Heritage Conference South Division (12-0). The Trojans host Xenia Legacy Christian on Tuesday and close the regular season by hosting Cedarville on Friday. Southeastern also was seeded No. 1 in the D-IV sectional at Troy and opens tourney play against Yellow Springs on Feb. 25.

State-wide media who subscribe to AP are eligible to vote for state polls. The weekly girls basketball state polls are released on Tuesdays.
