The Basketball Tournament: Sibert’s 3 sends Red Scare to third round

Dayton alumni team will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the regional final

Jordan Sibert played the hero for the second time in three days at UD Arena — a role he played throughout his Dayton Flyers career — and lifted the Red Scare to a 62-56 victory against the Golden Eagles on Tuesday in the second round of The Basketball Tournament.

Sibert hit a game-ending 3-pointer off an assist from Scoochie Smith as the Dayton alumni team reached the Elam Ending target score of 61 points. It needed two points to win the game. Sibert made a 3 instead.

Smith also assisted Sibert on his most famous shot, a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute against Boise State in the First Four in 2015. He also hit a game-winning 3-pointer in his first game as a Flyer against IPFW in 2013, and he had the game-ending shot in the first round Sunday in a 75-70 victory against CitiTeam.

It’s the biggest victory of the Red Scare’s four TBT appearances because the team knocked off the No. 2 seed Marquette alumni team, which won the TBT in 2020 and entered the game with a record of 23-5 in the tournament.

The No. 3 seed Red Scare will play No. 1 seed The Money Team at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled for 8 p.m., but the game time was changed on Tuesday. It will air on ESPN2.

The Money Team, a group backed by boxer Floyd Mayweather beat No. 8 Athletics Miami 71-67 in the first round and No. 4 Men of Mackey 92-75 in the second round Tuesday. Mitchell Creek led The Money Team with 26 points, and Trevor Booker had 21 points.

The Red Scare overcame a 16-4 first-quarter deficit and trailed 29-28 at halftime after Vee Sanford made a 3-pointer in the final seconds. Sibert scored 11 points in a four-minute stretch in the third quarter built a 44-34 lead.

The Red Scare led 49-40 entering the fourth after C.J. Walker made a shot from near halfcourt at the buzzer to end the third quarter. The Golden Eagles tied the game with a 9-0 run to start the fourth.

The game was tied at 53-53 entering the Elam Ending, which begins at the first clock stoppage under four minutes. Josh Cunningham scored the Red Scare’s first basket. Darrell Davis gave the team a 57-54 lead on a short jumper. Scoochie Smith then made two free throws to extend the lead to 59-54.

After two free throws by Elgin Cook, of the Golden Eagles, cut the Red Scare lead to 59-56, Sibert made the game-ending 3-pointer.

Sibert finished with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He made 5 of 10 3-pointers.

Smith had 10 points and four assists. Cunningham led the team with 11 rebounds.
