KETTERING — No sunscreen required when Dale Traber packs for vacation.

“Every day of vacation I have is used bowling,” Traber said.

That’s quite a few days as Traber has worked for JC Penney for 33 years, but he still sometimes scrambles to hit all of the Senior Tour stops and as many regional tournaments as possible. It paid off for Traber last year as the 52-year-old collected two PBA Senior Tour titles including the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters.

The bowler from Cedarburg, Wis., would like to add another title today. Traber averaged 230 through 16 games of qualifying Monday, April 19, and led the field at the PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Lanes with 3,680.

“Usually, there’s somebody who finds an answer to the lanes and, today, it was me,” Traber said. “I really didn’t change much of my game plan from Sunday. I used two different balls and it seemed like when everyone else slowed down, I was able to keep going.”

Traber, whose scores ranged from 199 to 264 on Monday, didn’t have his sights set on the top of the leaderboard, but he was vying for a bye or two. The top eight qualifiers receive two byes for today’s match-play finals.

While some qualifiers will start as early as 9 a.m. in the best-of-five format, Traber won’t bowl until 1:30 p.m.

“My main objective was to get some byes,” he said. “It’s not just the physical fatigue, but it can be tough mentally to go head to head against these guys all day.”

Whether Traber comes out on top or not today, there will be no time for celebration. He has to be at work at 5 a.m. on Wednesday so he will hop in the car after the finals and travel the 400 miles back to Milwaukee.

Vacation is over for Traber.
