Three months after being hired and three months before the first game of the season, Wright State softball coach Ray Loeser resigned.

Wright State athletic director Bob Grant said Loeser, who was hired on Aug. 16 to replace long-time coach Lynn Curylo after she accepted the job at Illinois-Chicago, gave no reason when he resigned earlier this month.

“I didn’t press it at all,” Grant said. “Sometimes the fit just isn’t right.”

Grant said the team will move forward with the current staff of Justine Wichman and Dave Brittingham.

Wichman came to WSU with Loeser after serving as his assistant for two years at the University of Charleston, where they led the Golden Eagles to the Division II College World Series last year.

Brittingham is in his 12th year as a WSU assistant coach.

“We hired Ray late in the game, and he left at a time where we would not find a large pool of applicants,” Grant said. “Our student-athletes are extraordinarily resilient and we have a great culture here so I don’t think this kind of change is going to be as difficult. This is a terrific group of young women who had a great year last year and are on the precipice of doing more great things.”

The Raiders went 37-23 overall last year and 18-6 in the Horizon League before falling to Valparaiso in the conference tournament championship game.

Wright State opens the season Feb. 10 against Wichita State in the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational in Houston, Texas.
