High temperatures, humidity prompts Heat Advisory tomorrow

Dangerous heat and humidity along with possibly severe storms are in the forecast for Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Rain chances for tonight have ended and skies will clear for an overnight low around 76 degrees.

A Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, issued by the NWS, for a combination of high temperatures around 96 degrees and high humidity that likely will result in the heat index reaching up to 105.

People are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and to check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.

Those who work or spend time outside should take extra precautions. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioning.

Strong to severe storms are possible Thursday with damaging winds the main threat. Locally heavy rain also is possible with the strongest storms. The showers and storms will be mainly between 4 and 5 p.m., according to the weather service.

Thursday night there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11 p.m. Skies will be partly cloudy with an overnight low around 73 degrees.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Friday afternoon, mainly after 2 p.m. Otherwise, it will be partly sunny and not as hot with high temperatures near 90 degrees.

Friday night, showers and thunderstorms are likely before 2 am. with a overnight low around 63 degrees as a cold front pushes into the area.

Cooler and drier air is expected for the weekend, which highs in the lower to middle 80s.
