A Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, issued by the NWS, for a combination of high temperatures around 96 degrees and high humidity that likely will result in the heat index reaching up to 105.
People are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and to check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
Those who work or spend time outside should take extra precautions. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioning.
Strong to severe storms are possible Thursday with damaging winds the main threat. Locally heavy rain also is possible with the strongest storms. The showers and storms will be mainly between 4 and 5 p.m., according to the weather service.
