New Year’s Eve day, night brings overcast skies with possible snow and rain chances

New Year’s Eve day brings an overcast sky cover and breezy winds from 10 to 15 mph which will “battle to control high temperatures,” according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Today has a chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Otherwise, temperatures will rise to reach the lower to mid-40s, while lows will fall around 31 degrees overnight.

A quarter inch looks to be a high-end amount and should be limited to the I-70 corridor and northward, the NWS said. New Year’s Eve night brings a chance of rain and snow showers before 8 p.m., followed by a chance of snow.

New Year’s Day involves dry but cloudy conditions with a high of 40 degrees. The night will be partly cloudy but freezing with a low of 26 degrees.

Sunshine brings warmer respite on Tuesday with a high of 42 degrees, followed by a mostly cloudy Tuesday night with a low of 27 degrees.

Partial sunshine sets in Wednesday with highs in the mid-40s. The next weather trough brings a brief shot of rain and snow Wednesday night to Thursday morning, according to the NWS. Wednesday night will mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 20s.

Thursday will be partly sunny with a high of 37 degrees. Overnight, expect mostly clear skies, cold temperatures and a low of 20 degrees.
