STOCK WATCH: Dow crosses 24K for first time l Dayton Business

The Dow Jones industrial average crossed the 24,000 mark for the first time on Thursday as the United States Senate neared a vote on a bill to overhaul the tax code.

The blue-chip index added more than 100 points immediately after the opening bell, boosted by solid gains in banking stocks like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase and Morgan Stanley.

The Dow was recently up 95.62 points, or 0.4 percent, to 24,036.30.

The S&P 500 also hit a fresh record, gaining 9.59 points, or 0.36 percent, to 2,635.66.

The Nasdaq Composite added 27.58 points, or 0.4 percent, to 6,851.97 after getting weighed down on Wednesday by selloffs in tech stocks.
